Our Mission
Fostering Struggling Readers' Love of Books
Our mission is to foster the love of audiobooks so struggling readers choose to listen to audiobooks daily. Many struggling readers usually hate reading, so they do everything in their power to avoid books. Thus, they are exposed to less vocabulary, information, and captivating stories than their reading peers.
According to research by the Every Child That Reads Organization, "Kids who engage in reading for 20 minutes a day are likely to score better than 90% of their peers on standardized tests." To help address this issue, our volunteers will listen to and discuss audiobooks weekly with their buddies. This interaction allows the buddy to build a meaningful relationship with a high school student. Through this connection, we hope to change the struggling readers' perceptions about books, encouraging them to listen to audiobooks on a daily basis.
We aim to establish Hearing for a Change clubs at every high school in Palm Beach County, FL, in order to support more struggling readers.
