Fostering Struggling Readers' Love of Books
Our mission is to foster the love of audiobooks so struggling readers choose to listen to audiobooks daily. Struggling readers usually hate reading, so they do everything in the power to avoid books, so they are exposed to less vocabulary, information and great stories than their reading peers. The Every Child that Reads Organization found, "Kids who engage in reading 20 minutes a day, statistics show, are likely to score better than 90% of their peers on standardize tests." By having our volunteers listening and discussing audiobooks weekly with their buddy, the buddy develops a great relationship with a high school student, and hopefully through their time together, the struggling reader will change his/her opinions about books and now want to listen to audiobooks daily. Our goal is to create Hearing for a Change clubs at every high school in Palm Beach County, FL, so we can help more struggling readers.
