Because it is one of the most rewarding clubs, since you are really changing a child's life. The Every Child that Reads Organization found, "Kids who engage in reading 20 minutes a day, statistics show, are likely to score better than 90% of their peers on standardize tests." Since struggling readers usually hate reading, they do not see the same vocabulary, knowledge and ideas as their reading peers. By showing these struggling readers just how engaging books can be, you are exposing them to the same vocabulary, knowledge and ideas as their reading peers so they are not missing out on such important information. So if you want to change a struggling reader's life,, please start a club at your high school, so we can reach more struggling readers.
Please e-mail HearingforaChange@gmail.com and tell us that you want to start a club at your high school. We have the funding to purchase all the needed supplies to run a successful Hearing for a Change club. We also will provide extensive training and guidance so you can successfully run a Hearing for a Change club at your high school.
Our mission statement is to show struggling readers in elementary school that books are amazing by having high school volunteers listen and discuss audiobooks with them weekly. Our goal is to encourage the struggling reader to become life long book lovers since listening to books expands their vocabulary, knowledge, imagination, and comprehension ability.
Hearing for a Change volunteers have transformed the lives of 92 struggling readers at Calusa Elementary School, Hammock Pointe Elementary School, Jupiter Elementary School, Sandpiper Elementary, The Bilgrave School, and Whispering Pines Elementary School. When our volunteers first met their reading buddies, most children disliked or even hated books. However, after 18 weeks of support, all of them reported that they now like or love reading. The volunteers showed these students that listening to audiobooks can be a fun and rewarding experience. Now, these children have access to over 88,000 audiobooks on their school computers, enabling them to continue enjoying great books on their own.
Hearing For A Change operates in Palm Beach County, Florida. Currently, there are three chapters. Our Olympic Heights Community High School chapter started in 2022. In 2023, we expanded to Spanish River Community High School and A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts. In 2024, we expanded to Jupiter Community High School. We are looking to expand to more high schools in 2025.
